What to do with that old prom dress in your closet? Wear-it-again to your wedding reception!
I recently finished a project that was a little different than my usual design ones. She wanted to take her old prom dress from 10 years ago and turn it into a shorter, more modern cocktail dress for her reception. It’s a common occurrence these days where brides want a second dress that’s is a bit more casual and easy to party and dance in. This is the first time I had been asked to take someone’s prom dress and turn it into one of these dresses, I jumped at the chance!
The dress originally was very long, with lots of organza and also a crinoline underneath. The top layer of organza, in Pantone’s Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid, is also the Bride’s wedding color. The skirt was bustled with medium-sized fabric rosettes, very 2000’s in style. The bodice was also to long for her upper body, creating a fold where it was unnecessary. This was easily fixed by raising the waist seam slightly.
Removing the crinoline and the mess it made inside the dress felt so good… I think it made the dress 3 pounds lighter!
Shortened all the remaining layers and attached a few of the rosettes to the waist to give it a little more visual interest. Now I think she has a great, functional dress she can wear to her reception and other occasions.
